Make a BSN Appointment

Check the website of the municipality where your registered address is located to get a BSN (Citizen Service Number). Make an appointment online or go to the municipality.

💡 Why

This is the first step after arriving in the Netherlands and registering at an address. You can think of BSN as your Citizen Service Number in the Netherlands. You need this number to open a bank account, get health insurance and many other things. Legally you must get a BSN within 5 days of arriving in the Netherlands, otherwise there's a fine up to €325. However, due to the housing shortage, municipalities are understanding about this because not everyone can find a house that fast. If you get it quickly, you'll handle your next tasks easily.

Visit the website of the municipality where you're going to live. For example, if you moved to Amsterdam, search for 'Gemeente Amsterdam BSN appointment'. Some municipalities allow online appointments, while others allow you to go directly without an appointment; this depends on the municipality.

Gather Required Documents

Gather all necessary documents for BSN registration in advance.

💡 Why

If you go with missing documents, your appointment is wasted and getting a new one can take weeks. Dutch bureaucracy is very strict about documents, so go prepared.

🎯 How

Passport, apostilled birth certificate (with sworn translation, in Dutch or English), rental contract, or the signed consent form from the landlord. If you're married, an apostilled translation of your marriage certificate may also be required. The easiest way is to get the apostille done before you leave your home country.

Visit the Municipality

What to expect at your appointment

Go to the municipal office (gemeentehuis or stadsdeelkantoor) where you made an appointment. If you didn't make an appointment, check opening hours and go.

💡 Why

This is where you officially register your residence and get your BSN. Without this visit, you cannot do any official business in the Netherlands.

🎯 How

Go 10 minutes early and say at the entrance that you're here for BSN. Bring all your documents and passport. Everyone at the municipality speaks English and is very helpful, don't worry about language. The process takes about 15-20 minutes, they take a photo and fingerprints. Then they might give you your BSN directly or tell you it's coming by post.

Receive Your BSN Letter

Critical next steps after registration

Wait for the official BSN letter after registration and check your mailbox regularly.

💡 Why

This letter officially confirms your BSN number and registered address. You may be asked for this document when opening a bank account or getting insurance.

🎯 How

The letter usually arrives within 1-2 weeks at your registered address. Sometimes they tell you the BSN number directly at the municipality or give you a temporary document, that works too. Keep the letter in a safe place when you receive it, save a copy on your phone. Memorize your 9-digit BSN number, you'll need it constantly.

Set Up DigiD

You need this for everything online

Create your DigiD account, the Netherlands' e-government portal.

💡 Why

You cannot use any digital government service in the Netherlands without DigiD. This is required for all kinds of official online transactions like paying taxes, opening a bank account or changing health insurance.

🎯 How

Go to digid.nl/aanvragen and apply with your BSN. An activation code will arrive by post within 5 business days. WARNING: This code is only valid for 21 days! Download the DigiD app as soon as you receive the letter and enter the code. Write down your username and password somewhere and NEVER forget them. If you forget your password and don't remember your username, you'll have to reapply, meaning no access to all services for weeks.
